The Shelfaway
Bathtub Accessibility Step
Client: Young girl living with Distal SMA
Challenge: How can we help children with wheelchairs and limited mobility get in and out of the bathtub safely and on their own?
Solution:
-
A set of collapsible bath shelves, allowing for easy and flexible set up, while maintaining solid support without requiring lower body strength.
-
Client can easily shift her body from her chair to highest seat, lowering herself gradually from there.
-
Steps can be easily folded to the side to allow for others to use the bath/shower normally.
Contributions:
-
Performed client interviews and user testing
-
Conducted material selection research
-
Designed and modeled prototypes for iteration
-
Fabricated a working proof of concept prototype from marine grade plywood
